citizen of the world

Everyone is beautiful today
I'm in love with the world
With every cell of everyone
Near and far, old and young

Frightened men behind closed doors
They seek the resolution of a thousand wars
Some people say
They will pledge allegiance anyway
But I become a citizen of the world
Oh, I become a citizen of the world

How they promised – to keep us loyal –
"We will never fight a war upon American soil"
How they scheme
To protect the American dream
But I dreamed of being in the world
I dream of our being in the world

Oh, a state of grace
In which there is no hiding place
All our shame erased, our fears released
Part god and part devil, part animal, part angel,
Acceptable in our humanity
Accepting that there is no enemy

In prison cells, in army camps
Broken hearts bear witness to our failed attempts
Some people say
We are still evolving anyway
One day we will be citizens of the world
One day we will be citizens of the world

We rise to fall
We fall to rise
We seek salvation in each other's eyes
And people say
I know you well and love you anyway
And I will say the same about the world
Oh, I will say the same to the world

Everyone is beautiful today
Everyone is beautiful today
Everyone is beautiful today…
