under the surface

Under the water the waves churn the sand/Yet the surface remains undisturbed
Trying to read you in maps made of parchment/Pages marked or unturned

I sit at this table with the tools of my trade/commit observation to verse
If I've been here before I've forgotten the way/No hope yet of charting a course

To bring me closer to you/If that's what you want me to do
May this compass and sextant and evening star/Show me a way to your truth
Under the surface/Under the surface

These may be dangerous waters or deep/But a careful soul might get through
Patiently picking a passage to share/That might bring me closer to you

I think I'll try climbing the mast to the top/Where I might get a much
clearer view of the rocks
Oh I want to dive – into your ocean/There's not much that I wouldn't do

To bring me closer to you/If that's what you want me to do
May this compass and sextant and evening star/Show me a way to your truth
Under the surface/Under the surface

Five fathoms deep/I dive down
I can't sleep/I may drown
Would it be/too strange
If we/had a sea-change

I want to go back to the moment we had / When I sang you that song on the beach
We just scratched the surface / And then you were gone like the treasure I couldn't reach

I long to be with you as much as I long / For the bracing embrace of the sea
And diving deep under the surface to taste / Her salt and honey

Endlessly rocking me (Out of the cradle)
Endlessly taking me

Under the surface (Rocking me…)
Under the surface (Taking me)

Under the surface (Poetry)
Under the surface (Taking me)

Under the surface (Patiently)
Under the surface (Taking me)

Under the surface (Rocking me…)
Under the surface (Taking me)

Under the surface
Under the surface
