It's the little things that get you
Like the fear of being burned
When the gifts you've freely given
Turn out to have been returned
And exchanged for something cheaper
Or worse for something fine
That's when you start looking harder
At what's yours and what is mine
Are you afraid to be forgiven
Afraid to comprehend
All that you have done
To your lovers and your friends
Would you rather live in ignorance
Not knowing what's been done
Can you forgive anybody
Can you even forgive one
Forgive one - one sin - that's been done
It's the little things that save you
Like a poem from a friend
Like a homemade batch of cookies
Like a story with no end
That may begin in sorrow
And may not be told in rhyme
It may only have one season
Yet be with you for all time
Are you afraid to be forgotten
Afraid of letting go
Of anyone you've ever loved
Or anyone you've known
Would you rather live unchanging
Nothing new under your sun
Can you forget anybody
Can you even forget one
Forget one - one person - you have known
It's the little things that last you
Like a habit of pretending
And innocence is much too great a thing
To ever be unending
And promises are seldom worth
The time they take to say
The greatest joys we'll ever know
Rarely come to stay
Are you afraid to be forsaken
Afraid to be alone
With nothing but the little things
You've saved inside your soul
Remember all that lives will live again
And nothing loved is gone
Can you let go of each moment
And have faith in the next one
Have faith in one - more little thing - that's just begun
